For Kids
At Cullman Electric Cooperative, we understand that today’s children are the next generation of co-op members, and it’s important we teach them the value of the cooperative business model in addition to lessons on energy efficiency and electrical safety.
In addition to our sponsorship and support of youth and school activities throughout the year, Cullman EC has a variety of classroom and other educational program, including:
- Powertown
Co-op employees can demonstrate for children how electricity works, the dangers it presents and how to stay safe around electricity. The portable, table-sized model is a wonderful teaching tool in the classroom.
- Field trips
Cullman EC can host students from elementary school up to high school age, offering a simple lesson in electrical safety or more complex lessons on electrical engineering and power generation. Students can also take a tour of our facility and speak with employees from different departments, and if the weather is nice, take a ride in a bucket truck.
- Montgomery Youth Tour and Washington, D.C. Youth Tour
The Montgomery Youth Tour is an annual event sponsored by the Alabama Rural Electric Association (AREA). Counselors from our local high school nominate deserving members of the junior class. In March, the group of students representing Cullman EC is joined by other high school students from across Alabama for several days of .
In June, the Washington, D.C. Youth Tour is hosted by the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA). Each year, two of Cullman EC’s youth tour participants travel with other students from Alabama for the weeklong conference attended by hundreds of students from all over the country. In March, the group of students representing Cullman EC is joined by other high school students from across Alabama for several days to visit historic sites, meet state leaders, learn about state politics and have a whole lot of fun!
