TVA Asks the Public to Conserve Electricity
Cullman Electric Cooperative is expecting record-high electricity demand early Wednesday morning, Jan. 17, 2024, as our service area experiences the coldest temperatures this season. The National Weather Service is predicting single-digit temperatures with wind-chill values below zero degrees.
The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) has issued a request, asking the public to voluntarily conserve electricity, specifically between 6:00 a.m. and 10:00 am Wednesday morning. TVA has informed local power companies that it does not anticipate requiring rolling power outages.
"TVA has spent significant time and resources over the past year to prepare for a weather system like this that is similar to what we experienced on Christmas weekend 2022," said Brian Lacy, Cullman EC's vice president of communications. "Cullman Electric's emergency operations plan worked extremely well the last time TVA called for rolling power outages, and we are prepared to respond quickly if that should happen again."
CUTOFFS CANCELLED FOR THIS WEEK
Cullman Electric has canceled all account cutoffs for the week due to the extremely cold weather. Members can track their electricity usage by logging in to their account via the Cullman EC online portal usage tracker, here. Members that have a SmartPay prepaid electric account need to monitor their account balance and maintain a credit to avoid a past due balance that will result in service being disconnected once cutoffs resume. Members can make a payment 24 hours a day over the phone, online or by using the kiosks at the Cullman and Addison offices.
